Welcome! from our Director

Welcome to the WV Prevention Research Center’s (WVPRC) website. In preparation for writing this message, I sat down to consider what messages would be important to present to a broad audience about our Center and the people who work to make it a success. I started to focus on our partnerships and quickly generated words such as “dynamic”, collaborative”, “innovative,” and “passionate about what we do”. Collectively, these words and simple phrases begin to form a short story about what makes our PRC so unique.
The Center’s multidisciplinary faculty and staff have extensive years of experience in community-engaged research and evaluation. The WVPRC partners with state and local departments of public health and education, as well as lay communities to grow nationally-recognized research, evaluation, and technical assistance initiatives in tobacco and obesity. The state and local communities we represent face significant health and economic issues on a daily basis. They have for decades. Despite this, West Virginians are grounded, determined, compassionate, and survivors. The WVPRC values these characteristics and embraces active involvement from our communities in many ways. We work by the principles of community-engaged research and believe community contributions to our teaching, research, and service products are crucial to our success. Our WVPRC investigators, staff, and students recognize opportunities where they can learn from our communities and, if successfully navigated, can give back to those who give their time and experiences.
Our center fully believes that mutually-beneficial engagement with state/local public health and education departments, communities, providers, and researchers is necessary to ensure partner trust and research relevance, and facilitate the rapid translation of applied research and evaluation to public health policies and practices that address key health disparities in our state and nation. Our aims are prove fair, sustainable, and cost-effective research, evaluation, training, and service to our partners, WV, and the nation. Our goal is to develop tangible products that can be utilized by our stakeholders and local communities to improve their health and vitality for years to come.
As you move through our website, you will notice that we emphasize certain areas of health such as tobacco prevention and cessation, and combating obesity and diabetes. However, we also address the needs of our communities as they are identified. We teach and give back to our University and communities through various forms of teaching and mentorship to ensure that the next generation is healthier than the one before. Thank you for your interest in our Center and the work we do.

Thank you,

Dr. Geri Dino
